Course Structure

Every lesson forms part of a carefully planned curriculum that I have designed using my 18 years of GCSE Maths teaching experience, ensuring students build the right knowledge at the right time.

How the Course is Structured

A Carefully Designed Learning Journey

I know that one of the biggest challenges when home educating is knowing where to start and how to build learning over time.

That’s why every Maths with Miss Murray course follows a carefully planned learning journey. Rather than simply working through topics one by one, the curriculum has been designed around how students learn best—building confidence first, then gradually connecting ideas across the whole GCSE course.

Every Student Starts at the Right Place

Following an initial assessment, every student joins the group that best matches their current level of understanding.

Each pathway is designed as a one-year programme. Throughout the course, students’ progress is monitored to determine when they are ready to move on to the next pathway or enter for their GCSE.

Every learner’s journey is different. Some students may be ready to sit their GCSE after completing one or two pathways, while others may benefit from progressing through additional stages before taking their exam. The focus is always on building secure understanding and confidence, rather than rushing through the curriculum.

The Three-Phase Learning Journey

Phase 1 – Build Your Mathematical Toolkit

Students begin by securing the core mathematical skills that unlock success across the rest of the curriculum. Rather than rushing into GCSE topics, we focus on developing confidence, fluency and understanding first.

Phase 2 – Open the Curriculum

Once these foundations are secure, students begin exploring all areas of GCSE Maths through carefully sequenced lessons. Topics are introduced at the right time, with each new idea building naturally on previous learning.

Phase 3 – Connect and Deepen

As the course progresses, students revisit, connect and apply their learning across multiple mathematical pathways. This develops long-term understanding, stronger reasoning skills and greater confidence when tackling GCSE exam questions.

Stage, Not Age

One of the core principles of Miss Murray’s Mission is that learning is based on stage, not age.

Every student is different, particularly within home education, and progress in Maths is rarely linear. This course is designed to meet students where they are, rather than where they are expected to be.

Suitable for a Range of Learners

Because learning is based on stage rather than age, the programme is suitable for:

  • Home-educated students working towards GCSE Maths
  • Students working below or above age-related expectations
  • Students who need to rebuild confidence before progressing
  • Sixth form and adult GCSE resit students

Every student follows an individual pathway based on their starting point, with progression determined by confidence, understanding and long-term success rather than age or school year.

A Spiral Curriculum Approach

Maths isn’t made up of isolated topics. Every area of the GCSE course connects to another.

That’s why the Maths with Miss Murray curriculum has been carefully designed so that students learn key foundations before moving on to more challenging ideas. Rather than teaching one topic and never returning to it, learning is continually revisited, strengthened and connected throughout the course.

This helps students develop deeper understanding, stronger long-term memory and greater confidence when applying their knowledge to unfamiliar GCSE questions.
